What is a Legal Document Assistant?

A legal document assistant is a self-employed, non-attorney who is licensed and bonded in the County where they do business and who assists the public in the preparation of legal documents. Prior to 2001, legal document assistants in California were referred to as "Independent Paralegals". Today, legal document assistants must have a combination of education and experience to qualify for registration under Business and Professions Code section 6400. Legal document assistants are prohibited by law from giving legal advice, but can refer the public to published materials and information.

Why should I hire an LDA instead of an attorney?

The court system can be intimidating and frustrating when you're going it alone. And depending on your legal situation, you may need an attorney. But some situations do not require one. In fact, some legal matters do not even require a court appearance. Legal documents assistants will prepare the same court documents that an attorney would at a fraction of the cost. If your situation requires an attorney, we can help you locate one that fits your needs. But if you feel confident handling your legal matter yourself and just need a bit of professional help in preparing the court papers, hiring a legal document assistant may be the right choice for you.
